What are URL parameters?

URL parameters (sometimes referred to as query strings) are text elements added to the end of a link (URL). These text elements generally consist of a "key" and a "value". Below you'll see a simple example of a link with URL parameters added on:

https://example.com/mypage ?traffic_source=google&another_key=another_value

The bold text is where the URL parameters start. In the above example, there are two key value pairs. One with the key "traffic_source" and the value "google". And the other with the key "another_key" and the value "another_value".

Essentially, you can use URL parameters to add extra data onto a link. Because of this, URL parameters are often used for analytics and tracking.

A common use case for why you would want to use URL parameters with DirectoryWebinar would be to track the traffic source of your event registrants. Say you're running ads on Facebook and Google for your event and you want to see which registrants are coming from Facebook and which are coming from Google.

When setting up your ads, you could add "traffic_source=google" to your Google ads link and traffic_source=facebook" to your Facebook ads.

Then whenever someone registers for your event, our system will store the URL parameters for that registrant. You could then view the URL parameters for each individual registrant, either in our built-in analytics or by exporting them to your own CRM/email platform, and see whether the registrant came from Google or Facebook.

This is just one example but you can use URL parameters to add all sorts of analytics & tracking data to your links.

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters refer to 5 specific URL parameters that are commonly used in many analytics platforms. You can see them all below:

utm_source - Example: utm_source=google

utm_medium - Example: utm_medium=cpc

utm_campaign - Example: utm_campaign=spring_sale

utm_term - Example: utm_term=running+shoes

utm_content - Example: utm_content=textlink

How to pass in URL & UTM parameters to DirectoryWebinar?

When someone registers for your event (either on a registration page hosted on our platform or via an embedded form on your own website/custom landing page), DirectoryWebinar will store any URL parameters at the webpage the registrant is currently on.

So pretty much any URL/UTM parameters you add to your registration link will be stored along with the usual registration data (email, first name, last name, etc...).

How to view and retrieve URL & UTM parameters for my registrants?

The easiest way to view the URL parameters of your registrants is to open your event's analytics page and look at the "URL parameters" column. This data is also exported to the .csv file that is downloaded when you click the "Export Registrants" button.

If you'd like to send the URL parameters to a 3rd party application or CRM, currently we support 2 methods of doing this: Zapier and Webhooks. If you're using DirectoryCRM, you can use our "inbound webhooks" feature to receive DirectoryWebinar's webhook data. See the webhook section below for an example of that.

Zapier

You can use our Zapier app (Events Connecter) to pass along a registrant's URL parameters. Our Zapier integration makes it easy to grab each individual value from the URL parameters passed in.

Webhooks

You can also set up a webhook to send registrant data, including URL parameters, to a destination of your choosing. Similar to our Zapier integration, you can individually grab each key value pair from the URL parameters via the webhook request payload.

It's also worth noting that if you are a DirectoryCRM user, you can use our "inbound webhook" feature to receive the DirectoryWebinar webhook data fairly easily. In the following example, we show an example workflow that runs when an event registration occurs.

First, we create a DirectoryCRM Workflow and set it to trigger on an "inbound webhook".

Then we grab the webhook URL provided by DirectoryCRM

and paste that into our event settings in DirectoryWebinar (under the webhook section).

In order to update the correct contact with the URL parameters, we look up the contact we want with the email passed from the webhook.

Finally, we can do anything we want with the URL parameters passed from the webhook. In this example, we simply add the "utm_source" value to the contact's notes.

Technically no, but we recommend keeping the number low to highlight the desired post types as its effect can get confused if you add all of your post types in the results.

Widgets are used to display testimonials and reviews collected in DirectoryTestimonial on your website(s).

They can be fully customized to suit your brand and are easily added to any site with a single line of code.

We are in process of adding all our tools for configurations into this plugin, but currently only DirectoryRelated uses this plugin. Other plugins such as DirectoryImport and DirectorySlider have their own Pluing Configurations on your Plugin Dashboard menu. All other plugins or widgets currently have the configuration in the widget itself.

Is it legal to use Google & Yelp photos?

In general there are no federal laws against web scraping in the United States as long as the scraped data is publicly available and the scraping activity does not harm the website being scraped.

We do not use Yelp photos in our solution only for reviews. And we do not store any data from the Google API as it is against their Terms of Service for that provided data. We use he Google API for search and map display only to use for initial lookup and display of info only. The storing of the data comes from a third party API from Outscraper which is used to get the images.

We have configuration settings that can turn off the image download option for listing creation if that is a concern. If you are in a location or jurisdiction that only permits text and data mining you can turn off the photo download capability of DirectoryImport and DirectoryPhotos and simply have them upload their own images to display with DirectorySlider so all images are self added. So we allow you to turn on or off as your specific needs or requirements change.

Scraping publicly available information on the web in an automated way is legal as long as the scraped data is not used for any harmful purpose or directly attacking the scraped website’s business or operations. But you should avoid scraping personal data or intellectual property, or confidential data. Outscraper answers the legality issue for public data on their website here: https://outscraper.com/faq/ The regulations or limitations of course may vary by location, as this is a US only example and legal precedence may change over time, or vary based on your location. You can easily embed content from DirectoryKnowledgebase into your existing website, app, product or online service with just a few lines of code.

Begin by going to the Share section and then select Embed.

We offer the following type of embeds:

Floating Widget (with button and draw options) - this option floats a button or drawer “pre-expand” over your site, application, product or service - when clicked a content panel opens up
Overlay / Pop Up - this opens an overlay / popup over whatever the user is currently seeing - it’s triggered by a link you can place wherever you want in your site, application, product or service
Inline - pull content directly into the same pages/screens your users are seeing with this option - use blend mode for a truly seamless experience!

We also offer a fourth option which can be useful in some circumstances:

Redirect - this option creates an automatic redirect which will replace the page the embed is fired from with a DirectoryKnowledgebase hosted page. This is achieved by auto forwarding the user. This option can be useful in certain scenarios, for example if you constrained by only being able to publish via a CMS and want some navigation or pages within your CMS structure to link out to DirectoryKnowledgebase hosted content. Note you will likely want to use URL rules in conjunction with the redirect embed (otherwise the redirect will happen on all pages the embed is present on!).

In terms of the type of content you can embed options include:

Hosted Hub results - paginated results showing the default filtered FAQs and Workflows as seen on your Hosted Hub homepage
A single FAQ - your choice of FAQ
A single Workflow - your choice of Workflow
Author listing - paginated results showing FAQs from a particular author
Category listing - paginated results showing FAQs within a partiuclar category
Filtered results - paginated results showing FAQs and Workflows filtered by your choice of filter (eg most popular, most recent, most helpful etc)
Search results (contextual) - paginated results showing FAQs and Workflows according to a search query provided via a meta tag on your page
Search results (specified search query) - paginated results showing FAQs and Workflows according to a given search query
Tag listing - paginated results showing FAQs referenced by particular tag

Note that if you just want to embed a single FAQ or Workflow you can also access a quick embed interface via the Library in both the FAQ and Workflow sections. Simply select "Embed" from the menu accessible on the right hand side of the respective published FAQ or Workflow.

You can configure various options around the visual style of your embed. The exact options available depend on the type of embed you have chosen.

When you have finished configuring the content and visual appearance of your embed, DirectoryKnowledgebase will give you the code that can be used to pull your content into your website, app, product or online service.
